Press Release 24th February 2004

For your business and technology editors

Weka announces the release of its new improved product, WEKA-Protector™ type S, for control of electrical stray currents, to be used together with WEKA Hi-Resist coolers. The WEKA-Protector™ type S is the result of extensive R&D where the aim has been to improve and simplify its forerunner, the CuNi-Protector.

Krimpen a/d Lek, 01 February, 2004 - WEKA Boxcoolers BV, the boxcooler company, will further strengthen the competitiveness of the boxcooler system. WEKA’s Hi-Resist coolers, in combination with WEKA Protector™ type S, offers an outstanding boxcooler system with respect to reliability, resistance to corrosion and marine growth. Weka's advantage compared to its boxcooler competitors will increase further.

The basic principle of the WEKA boxcooler system is to bring the fresh water system of the engine to the boxcooler directly without using any intermediate salt-water system, thus getting rid of all salt-water components inside the vessel. The benefits, compared to conventional cooling, are obvious:
  • more space in engine room (no salt water piping /components)
  • less maintenance (simple reliable system, no salt water piping)
  • low investment (less components and piping gives a low overall cost)
  • less man-hours at the shipyard
  • no marine growth (barnacles etc.) due to WEKA's material Hi-Resist
  • no corrosion of the coolers, or the ship, due to WEKA's material Hi-Resist in combination with WEKA's electronic potential-controller (WEKA-Protector™ type S).

  •
The advantages of the WEKA Protector™ type S compared to its predecessor, the CuNi-Protector, are:
  • no penetration of the ship’s tanktop. All measurements and controls are carried out inside the ship
  • no power supply
  • less complicated electronics means more reliable technology
  • easy installation
  • stand-alone unit, which does not affect any alarm or electrical system in the engine room
  • price competitive.

    Mats Hjortberg, Weka technical director:
    - "The WEKA Protector™ type S will vastly improve our boxcooler concept. To simplify the installation of our products will be of utmost importance when the new building market moves to East Asia and other distant countries where commissioning and quality control becomes more complicated."

The Boxcooler system is already competitive says Cees de Kwant, Weka managing director:
    - "Using WEKA Hi-Resist boxcoolers together with the new WEKA Protector™ type S will give us a very good position at the market. Yards and Owners can be guaranteed a reliable system where corrosion of boxcoolers or the ship’s hull is eliminated. In addition, WEKA’s Hi-Resist material protects the cooler from marine growth."

Weka International AB (www.weka.biz) develops marine technology solutions. Weka is the leading global boxcooler company. Weka spends resources to improve the boxcooler in order to spread its use, and to implement environmentally sound solutions.
