Dutch company presents coolers with higher efficiency and 40 % lower price: aims for 60 % world market share
Krimpen, June 20 - Weka International, the boxcooler company, today announced a revolutionary series of coolers. The new coolers are built on the boxcooler principle, and offer higher efficiency at 40 % lower prices.
This high-tech application has a huge market potential. The principle which sets the Weka system apart from existing cooler systems is a proprietary development of design and materials.
A new level of cost and efficiency
Take the example of cooling of ship diesel engines: traditionally, salt water was taken into the ship’s engine room, where it cooled the engine’s hot water in a heat exchanger. Such a cooling system requires safe ways of handling corrosive water in the ship including valves and piping, expensive heat exchangers, and has an environmental implication if oil leaks into the sea.
The Weka application based on the boxcooler concept means that the cooling is done outside the ship. A very simple but very robust heat exchanger system is built into chests under the ship. Corrosive salt water never comes into the ship. The environmental problem of oil leaking into water is inhibited. The cost compared to conventional cooling systems is reduced by at least 40 percent.
Even more important is the maintenance cost. While conventional cooling systems for ships require extensive maintenance, the new boxcooler series are virtually maintenance-free. This reduces direct investment cost, but also reduces the time a ship has to spend in dock for maintenance.
Cees de Kwant, Weka managing director:
- "We estimate the ship cooler market today to be below one billion Euros per annum, worldwide. Our new cooler series reaches an annual market of about 400 million Euros. We expect the new cooler type to get 20 % of this market medium-term, and may reach 60 % eventually."
New materials are lighter and more efficient
The main explanation to the high efficiency of the new coolers is the use of new materials. Whereas oldfashioned boxcoolers are made using an aluminium-brass alloy, the new Weka coolers are made using a copper-nickel alloy.
Boxcooler – the cool alternative !
The boxcooler is a Dutch invention which has not really spread outside its home country. This is now to change. Weka International has built up a marketing organisation with sales outlets, production partners, and service partners in more than 20 countries around the world. New shipbuilding countries like China are important markets.
Mats Hjortberg, technical director for Weka International:
- "Customers and shipbuilders see huge advantages with our new ship coolers. They appreciate the faster installation, lower price, higher efficiency, and lower maintenance costs. But they also appreciate the superior support we are offering. Through our five production partners and many service points we can support a customer with the design work and through the life span of the cooler. Service includes a lot more than only repairs, even if though our rugged boxcoolers rarely need repair."
Weka International (www.weka.biz) develops marine technology solutions. Weka is the leading global boxcooler company. Weka has invested own funds into the new series of ship coolers. During the last few years a global sales, manufacturing, and service net has been built up. Based on several years of development, Weka is now prepared to take the boxcooler to the world, and expand its use also outside the ship market.
