Press Release 24th June 2002
For your business and technology editors
Carpen and Weka announce the Conihex project. The Boxcooler will become more price competitive, smaller, and more efficient. Modularisation will shorten delivery times.
Krimpen, 24 June - Weka International, the boxcooler company, and Carpen Consultants, today announced an ambitious joint development project. Conihex – short for Copper-Nickel Heat Exchanger – will further strengthen the competitiveness of the boxcooler compared to traditional cooling systems. And Weka's advantage compared to its boxcooler competitors will increase further.
The boxcooler is the most efficient way of cooling a ship's diesel engine. Unlike conventional cooling systems, which take in raw water into the ship where the engine is cooled via a heat exchanger – a system requiring expensive piping, valves and which takes valuable space away – the boxcooler is placed in a chest in the ship. This is not only a cost efficient but also an environmentally superior solution.
The Conihex project is a joint effort by several partners, led by Carpen Consultants BV in Heerenveen, the Netherlands. The project will improve heat efficiency and material usage, as well as improve calculation methods for boxcoolers.
Mats Hjortberg, Weka technical director:
- "The Conihex project will vastly improve the present boxcooler design. The most important result may actually be in the modularisation. This is very important for the competitiveness in a changing boxcooler market."
The boxcooler is already competitive. Says Cees de Kwant, Weka managing director:
- "Our boxcooler is already 40 % lighter and cheaper than conventional coolers. Our delivery times are compatible with the market. We hope that the Conihex project will cut weight and cost by another 6-8 %. The modular concept shall reduce delivery time to 3-4 weeks."
The project shall develop the boxcooler's heat conductivity, mechanical strength and resistance, anti-fouling properties, protection against corrosion, and develop a modularised design.
Dr C.A. Timmermans, Carpen Consultants’ research manager:
- "Conihex is a real high tech project which combines the resources of several Dutch companies, in a field where Dutch companies demand the global lead position. The combination of laser welding technology with applications know-how from several companies make this project unique. I am convinced Conihex will further strengthen Dutch companies' competitiveness in the global shipbuilding market."
Weka plans to implement the new development into their boxcooler series as soon as possible.
Weka International (www.weka.biz) develops marine technology solutions. Weka is the leading global boxcooler company. Weka spends resources to improve the boxcooler in order to spread its use, and to implement environmentally sound solutions.
